Garden in May

I’m going to indulge a bit a share lots of pictures of the garden. After years of work, it’s finally grown into something I’m quite happy about. There are always children playing, and lots of fruits and vegetables coming up as well.

Things will often take longer than we want. Life is slow. I plant an apple tree, and I won’t get fruit for a few years. I make plans that only exist on paper for a long time, but eventually with gradual work. they start to take shape. Life is slow in a very good way that teaches us patience and teaches us to appreciate what we have.

Capitol Reef

We took a short camping trip to Capitol Reef. The camping was cold, but it made the hiking the next day rather nice.

IMG_5614IMG_5620IMG_5622IMG_5623IMG_5627IMG_5633IMG_5636IMG_5638IMG_5639IMG_5643IMG_5648IMG_5649IMG_5652IMG_5656IMG_5658IMG_5660IMG_5666IMG_5668IMG_5670IMG_5671

We went on one long hike, The Capitol Gorge trail. Everyone had a great time, it was rated an 8/10…and that’s the only hike we did. My children don’t always like hiking, so one good hike was enough.

Spring Events

One of my bucket list items is to raise bees. I’ve learned a bit about bees, and one of my strange desires was to see a bee swarm. This year, we had one come and nest in our tree. It was awesome.

But a bee swarm in my tree is pretty useless, so a few hours later, we had a beekeeper come by, and the next day, the bees were gone.

Here are a few more pictures enjoying all the spring flowers.

Soccer

We finished up another season of soccer. Peter excelled and was a star player. Curtis did quite well for being the youngest person on his team, and Henry….he got better at running after the ball and not just looking at the dogs on the sideline.

Also a few pictures of Henry doing a giant, foamy volcano.

Spring Stuff

First up is the pinewood derby.

Peter took third place. I would say I was proud of him for working so hard on his car, but his dad made it and Peter had to be coerced to help. They had a lot of fun at the actual race though. 57576950_2318174134869303_832577447529545728_n-2

This is Curtis doing one of the things he likes most. He loves video games, which is sometimes a challenge. He also loves playing outside with friends and reading, so it’s okay.

And this is Henry’s favorite thing in the whole world. “Flower” (his flower blanket) ranks above Mommy sometimes.

We went to the park on the first of May. It was great fun, but I did not expect to be having a snowball fight.

In other weather-related news, we had our nearly annual hail storm and got to test out the new drain by the garage. It prevented some, but not all of the flooding. The kids loved watching the storm roll in. The weather has been perfectly normal in spring: wildly unpredictable.

On a good weather day, we got the canoe out. I drive by the lake when I go up to school and I had been itching to get out on the water.

Finally a little belated Valentine from Henry. He comes up with the cutest things. IMG_20190429_103023386-2

Whirlwind

The last few weeks have gone quickly or slowly. I’m not sure which. It’s been a whirlwind of model building, photoshop, research articles, and listening to final presentations. I turned in my last assignment for the semester today. Now I can breathe. And get caught up on the weeds in the garden that have taken over while I was busy.

My one regret is I don’t have any work I’m proud of. I completed projects and received decent grades, but a lot of what I did was in a rush or in a group project. I didn’t refine it to a point that I knew I did as good as I could. I might take the summer to build more portfolio pieces where I have more time and autonomy do what I know I can do.

For now, I’m transferring much of my efforts into the garden. It’s beautiful in spite of the weeds.

I would say this is the first harvest of the season, but we’ve actually been cutting lettuce for weeks. I’ve also had asparagus, but it doesn’t make it into the house. IMG_5337

Mini Vacations

Joe and I have been to Twin Falls twice without our children. We had false memories of bringing our children there: mostly we were thinking about how much fun they would have to when we were there without them. For spring break, we packed up and took them on a mini-vacation.

IMG_5274IMG_5277IMG_5280IMG_5283IMG_5288IMG_5290IMG_5299

I love mini-vacations. We leisurely left when we wanted to and didn’t have far to drive. We spent the day exploring cool waterfalls and went out for dinner. The kids love staying at hotels with pools. We were home the next day, still had plenty of time to do chores and catch up on homework. Short vacations are just so much less stress than long ones.

Lessons From Graduate School

I have a little over four weeks left of school, and then I will be halfway through my graduate degree program. (Sidenote: it’s a three-year program, I’ve been going two years in, and I still have three years left. That’s how it’s worked out with balancing my school on top of my family schedule. And it’s okay. I”m making up for getting through my undergraduate degree in three years.)

I’ve learned a lot. I’ve learned how to make fancy graphics pretty quickly. Example:

Picture 1-2

I’ve also learned how to meet deadlines without staying up late or letting school take over my life. My tips are don’t procrastinate, and be okay with work that isn’t perfect or even the best you can do. Good enough usually is just fine. I actually had one assignment with two parts. I loved the first part, hated the second. The second one got me a better grade. My perfect is different than someone else’s and trying to spend all that time to reach that perfection level is a waste.

One of the most interesting things I learned is sometimes less instruction and guidance is better, especially when it is mirrored with high expectation. It’s super annoying: I would rather a nice rubric with all the instruction on how to get there. But sometimes without that, it forces you to try harder, motivates you to learn how to teach yourself things, and helps promote creativity. Grading rubrics don’t exist in the real world.

I’ve learned it’s important to segment my time and not let any one thing take over my life. It’s good to have a lot going on: school work, home, self-care, family responsibilities. And it’s good to sit down and just focus on one of those things instead of worrying about everything at once.

Spring

Every year I take about the same pictures in early spring. It is so fun to have the first flowers appear.

IMG_5257IMG_5259

I took this picture of weeds…they are all weeds, except for the shrub. One thing that has changed in my perception of gardening is weeds. Weeds can be friends, not foe. All of these are winter annuals and they will quickly die back in summer, none are too invasive.

IMG_5260

When we first moved into our house there weren’t any weeds, but there weren’t any worms either. The soil was pretty sterile and awful. One of the best things we’ve done to improve the soil is not tilling or pouring on herbicides to control all the weeds and letting the non-invasive weeds grow as a free cover crop. We mow them down and do get rid of the more invasive ones, but weeds have been a part of developing better soil.

The big project we’ve been working on is these raised beds in the garden. They have been planned for years, and we finally had the time (and no other pressing projects) to put them in.

IMG_5261

We built them with remnants of sheet piles that my brother-in-law picked up from a large construction project. It was super cheap, and not that hard to put together (we rented a trencher which was far worth the small rental fee).

I’m trying to do a better job of utilizing my greenhouse. I just planted tomatoes (two months early…I think I will double cover them if it gets cold again), and I’ve got peas and lettuce going strong.

Birthdays, Trips and Play

First up, Curtis had a birthday. We had two parties, one for friends and one for family, and probably the highlight of everything was the Creeper pinata that Joe made.

IMG_20190316_151622_01IMG_5231IMG_5238IMG_5235

He asked for one thing: he wanted an Alexa. So we have one. It’s kind of annoying most of the time, sometimes useful.

At school, we sometimes learn about things like adventure playgrounds. And unlike most of my classmates, I get to home and do it.

IMG_5240

Finally, we took a spring break trip to Moab. IMG_5243IMG_5244IMG_5245IMG_5248IMG_5249
